Have you circled June 6 on your calendar yet? If not, grab your brightest red marker — because it is almost time for the 5th Annual Jessie Avenue Community Celebration!
This year’s celebration will be especially meaningful as we also recognize the 120th Anniversary of the opening of the very first Convalescent Home of Winnipeg — a remarkable milestone in our shared history of caring for older adults in our community.
Each year, this event brings together Residents, families, friends, staff, volunteers, and our wonderful Jessie Avenue neighbors as we officially kick off the summer season together. It is truly one of the happiest afternoons of the year at The Home!
The celebration will run from approximately 1:00pm until 6:00PM-ish, with the BBQ sizzling from about 1:00pm to 3:00pm-ish before the grill takes a well-earned rest until next summer. Guests can enjoy hotdogs, cold drinks, ice cream, summertime treats, music, laughter, and plenty of neighborly fun.
There will also be:
- Fabulous music
- A bouncy castle (possibly two!) for the little ones
- Face painting
- Glitter tattoos
- A magician
- Balloon twisting
- And more!
This year’s celebration is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
Additionally, we are deeply grateful to our City Councillor, Sherri Rollins, for her gracious support through a City of Winnipeg Per Capita Grant, helping offset some of the costs associated with this neighborhood celebration.
We share this notice both as a warm invitation for you to join us with your loved one, and as a courtesy regarding parking and traffic. Jessie Avenue will be closed for one block between Hugo Street North and Cockburn Street during the event, and parking on that section of the street will not be permitted.
As you might imagine, there will also be a little more excitement and noise than usual — music playing, children laughing, neighbors chatting, and everyone simply enjoying the return of summer.
Residents who wish to attend outdoors will be escorted outside so they too can enjoy the sunshine, fresh air, entertainment, and celebration atmosphere (and yes — we are collectively hoping and praying for beautiful weather!).
We truly hope you might stop by, even for a short while, to celebrate community, connection, and the beginning of another Manitoba summer with us.
Warm regards,
Sherry Heppner
Development Coordinator
